The Babadook is a 2014 Australian horror film, written and directed by Jennifer Kent, and produced by Causeway Films. Based on the short film MONSTER also written and directed by Jennifer Kent in 2005. The film was shown at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival to critical acclaim.[2][3] Production costs were primarily provided by Screen Australia and the South Australian Film Corporation (SAFC), but Kent also raised US$30,071 on the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter.Amelia's husband Oskar died while he was driving her to the hospital to give birth to their first child, and Amelia has raised their son Samuel alone. Samuel's erratic behavior is causing him difficulties at school, and it is related to his preoccupation with an imaginary monster, which he has built weapons to fight. He is also interested in learning magic tricks. Amelia is forced to take her son out of school due to his ongoing behavioral problems.
Samuel asks his mother to read from a mysterious pop-up storybook found on his shelf, which is called "Mister Babadook". The story is about a supernatural monster that cannot be dismissed once someone is made aware of its existence. After hearing the story, Amelia is disturbed by it and Samuel then becomes convinced that the Babadook has started stalking them in their home.
Strange events begin occurring throughout the house, but Amelia attributes them to Samuel acting out; although, Sam insists that Babadook is real. Amelia eventually rips up the "Mister Babadook" book and disposes of it in the rubbish bin outside.
At his cousin Ruby’s birthday party, Sam pushes Ruby out of a treehouse and accidentally breaks her nose in two places after she refuses to believe in the Babadook, and teases Samuel for not having a father. Meanwhile, Amelia’s sister Claire admits to Amelia that she cannot stand to be around Samuel, and suspects that Amelia feels the same way.
Samuel has a seizure after experiencing a vision of the monster in the back seat of the family car. Amelia convinces a doctor to prescribe sedatives to help Samuel sleep, and also medication for herself, so that she may finally sleep after being kept up for so long by her son's issues. Amelia hears knocking at the door and finds a repaired and altered "Mister Babadook" storybook on the front step. She reads a passage about how the monster becomes stronger the more someone denies its existence, and sees new pop-ups that depict her killing the pet dog, strangling Samuel to death and cutting her own throat. Amelia burns the book on an outdoor grill.
After a strange phone call, Amelia goes to the police to report a stalker, but the police tell her that they are unable to do anything—especially when she is unable to produce the storybook. Prue and Warren from the Department of Community Services visit Amelia’s house to inspect Samuel’s home life, and leave paperwork for her to complete until their return visit. As more inexplicable events and strange visions occur, Amelia gradually comes to believe that the Babadook is haunting her and her son, and that she is becoming possessed.
With her mental health deteriorating, Amelia shows signs that she intends to inflict harm upon Samuel. Samuel stabs her in the leg with a kitchen knife during an altercation and leads Amelia into the booby-trapped basement, where he captures her among stored items belonging to Oskar. Amelia coughs up a black substance and escapes with Samuel. However, an invisible force pulls Samuel throughout Amelia’s bedroom. The Babadook appears and Amelia warns it against harming her son. The Babadook collapses and its spirit retreats to the cellar.
