Two best friends rise through the ranks of New York's Chinese underworld in the 1980s.

 Directors: Wai-keung Lau, Andrew Loo
Writers: Michael Di Jiacomo, Andrew Loo
Stars: Justin Chon, Kevin Wu, Harry Shum Jr.

Asian-American actors get so few opportunities to play significant roles that films placing them front and center seem worth supporting on general principle. All the same, it’s a bummer that Revenge Of The Green Dragons lacks the ingenuity and intensity of Infernal Affairs, the 2002 Hong Kong thriller Martin Scorsese turned into his Oscar-winning triumph The Departed. By way of thanks, Scorsese serves as an executive producer on Green Dragons, which was co-directed by Infernal Affairs co-director Andrew Lau (working with a different collaborator this time), and he may well have played a role in securing Ray Liotta for one of the key American parts. True reciprocation, though, would have seen Lau remake one of Scorsese’s films, and an Asian-American version of Mean Streets set in ’80s Chinatown (which is right next to Little Italy!) would surely have been far more interesting than this generic, nondescript gangster saga. Given how many standard-issue genre beats Green Dragons hits, it’s surprising to learn that it’s based on actual events—the primary source material is a lengthy New Yorker article written by Fredric Dannen in 1992, not long after the shit went down. As fictionalized, the story focuses on Sonny (Justin Chon, familiar to many as Eric from the Twilight films) and Steven (Kevin Wu), who were smuggled to America as kids and wound up joining the Green Dragons, one of several savage Asian-American gangs operating in Queens during the ’80s. Their relationship actually does have a bit of a Mean Streets vibe, with Sonny as the sensible peacekeeper à la Harvey Keitel and Steven as the Robert De Niro-esque volatile hothead; both are in thrall to Dragons leader Paul Wong (Glee’s Harry Shum Jr.), who’s graduating from human trafficking and petty larceny to bringing heroin into the country hidden in Chinese pastries. Inevitably, loyalties prove tenuous and allegiances shatter. When characters start openly discussing the “American dream,” it’s sufferin’ time.

On April 20, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico. It killed 11 workers and caused the worst oil spill in American history. The explosion still haunts the lives of those most intimately affected, though the story has long ago faded from the front page. At once a fascinating corporate thriller, a heartbreaking human drama and a peek inside the walls of the secretive oil industry, "The Great Invisible" is the first documentary feature to go beyond the media coverage to examine the crisis in depth through the eyes of oil executives, survivors and Gulf Coast residents who experienced it first-hand and then were left to pick up the pieces while the world moved on.Fiery video images bring us back to April 20, 2010, the date that a horrific explosion occurred aboard the Deepwater Horizon, a Transocean-owned, BP-leased rig positioned above the deepest oil well in history. The blaze claimed the lives of 11 workers, and the uncapped well gushed an estimated 4.2 million barrels of oil into the sea over the next 87 days, in one of the worst man-made environmental disasters on record. Among other things, Brown’s film represents a conscious attempt to hear from those impacted by the catastrophe, and also to offer a catalogue of BP’s moral negligence, from its corner-cutting safety lapses leading up to the explosion to its grossly ineffectual cleanup operation afterward. Among those onboard the Deepwater Horizon were chief mechanic Douglas Harold Brown, who delivers harrowing testimony about the night of the explosion (illustrated in quick, impressionistic blips of footage); he and fellow survivor Stephen Stone poignantly speak out about their sense of guilt and post-traumatic stress disorder. The family of Gordon Jones, a drilling fluids engineer killed in the blast, express their anguish as well as their anger at BP for its lack of contrition or accountability, a $20 billion trust fund set aside to settle claims arising from the oil spill notwithstanding. Kenneth Feinberg, the attorney chosen to administer the fund, is the closest figure to BP interviewed here; although the film doesn’t delve too deeply into the controversial matter of his compensation (by BP) or his denials of numerous claims, his tone-deaf reference to the settlement as a “gift” to locals speaks for itself. But Brown’s inherent interest in complexity leads her beyond mere finger pointing; she subtly reveals how the entire capitalist machinery of oil production and consumption is entrenched in American life in general, and Southern life in particular. The filmmaker brings her camera and crew to Bayou La Batre, the seafood capital of Alabama, where the decimated oyster population has cost countless workers their jobs and homes. One local hero is Roosevelt Harris, a food-pantry volunteer who encourages others in the community to file claims for the money they deserve; their unwillingness to do so speaks to a collective sense of fear, skepticism and helplessness, as well as class and cultural barriers that impede any sort of meaningful engagement or discussion.

The filmmaker stated that she wanted an established actress in the lead role opposite Khan. Names such as Sonakshi Sinha, Asin, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Parineeti Chopra and Katrina Kaif were rumoured to play the role, however Deepika Padukone was finalized, making it her third film with Shah Rukh Khan after Om Shanti Om and Chennai Express (2013). As for the lead role, Khan was one of the director's first choice for the film.[16] The actor was reported to be playing the role of a con artist in the film which has Deepika in the role of a Marathi dancer. At a point, John Abraham was to play one of the supporting roles but Sonu Sood replaced him. Boman Irani was confirmed by the director during an interview. In August 2013, Jackie Shroff was finalised to play the film's antagonist. The director's brother Sajid Khan will be making a guest appearance while actress Malaika Arora Khan was also signed to appear in a cameo role. Review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes gives a 53% approval rating, based on 17 reviews, with an average rating of 5.3/10. John DeFore of The Hollywood Reporter gave a positive review of the film, remarking, "While this all begins as a kind of supernatural black comedy ... the tone grows darker with each revelation". Joe Hill, who wrote the novel the film is based on, praised Radcliffe's performance, calling it a "wrenching, vulnerable, emotionally naked performance that isn’t like anything he’s ever done on screen before. He is such a wonderful Ig Perrish". The Guardian scored the film two out of five stars, calling it "a Dogma-style mash-up of grim comedy and religious satire".[27] Eric Kohn of IndieWire wrote, "Predominantly a failure of tone, "Horns" has plenty of admirable traits and yet dooms itself from the outset. It's an admirable conceit stuffed into far less subtle material".[28] Peter Debruge of Variety sensed that the film "benefits from the helmer's twisted sensibility, but suffers from a case of overall silliness".[29] Jonathan Weichsel of MoreHorror.com stated that "The cast is all around terrific, especially Daniel Radcliff who is nothing short of phenomenal, and the set pieces are entertaining in that wild, over the top way that only horror can pull off effectively."

The next year, he made a trailer to promote and gain attention and funds for his project, which went viral.[9] He also launched a campaign at Indiegogo to raise $25,000 but he got an overwhelming response and managed to raise $40,000 instead.[10] The project won Indiewire's Project of the Year title and Simien was later invited to 2013 Tribeca Film Festival to participate in Filmmaker/Industry meetings hosted by the festival.[11] Talking about Tribeca Film Festival, Simien said that "we had a lot of meetings with a lot of studios. We had a lot of conversations with studios and distributors and basically, we decided that the best offer on the table was from an independent financier, Julie Lebedev of Code Red Films. To make it independently, that was really the dream -- because then we could make the movie we wanted to make.

A washed-up actor who once played an iconic superhero must overcome his ego and family trouble as he mounts a Broadway play in a bid to reclaim his past glory.

 Director: Alejandro González Iñárritu
Writers: Alejandro González Iñárritu (screenplay), Nicolás Giacobone (screenplay),
Stars: Michael Keaton, Zach Galifianakis,

Edward Norton Riggan Thomson is a washed-up Hollywood actor who once played the superhero Birdman, before leaving the franchise to reinvent his career by directing and starring in an adaptation of Raymond Carver's short story What We Talk About When We Talk About Love. The play is produced by Riggan's best friend Jake and stars Riggan's girlfriend Laura and actress Lesley. Riggan's daughter Sam, a recovering drug addict, is also part of the production as Riggan's assistant, and he has refinanced the house belonging to his ex-wife Sylvia to fund the play. Throughout all of this, Riggan is mocked by the disembodied voice of Birdman, who claims he will fail. After one of the leads is injured by a falling stage light, Jake convinces Riggan to replace him with famous method actor Mike Shiner, who becomes attracted to Sam. Laura later announces she's pregnant and breaks up with Riggan when he appears to be disappointed. During preview performances, Mike insists on drinking real gin on stage, and when he's instead handed a prop, he interrupts the performance and berates Riggan, who then decides to fire Mike, but is then told by Jake his addition to the cast has boosted ticket sales and they can't lose him. Riggan and Mike go to a bar, where Riggan tells Mike he needs the play to be succesful, and mentions that he once received a compliment from Raymond Carver on a napkin after a performance back when he was a struggling theater actor. Mike points out it's a bar napkin and Carver wrote it while drunk. He dismisses Riggan as untalented for Broadway and introduces him to Tabitha, a vicious critic whose review will make or break Riggan's play. During their second performance, Riggan, Mike, and Lesley perform a scene where Riggan's character catches Lesley's character cheating on him with Mike's character and commits suicide. Mike gets an erection and attempts to persuade Lesley to have sex with him on stage, but she refuses. Although the audience is distracted by Mike's arousal, the performance is a success, and Riggan comforts Lesley afterwards. Laura eavesdrops on them and confides with Lesley that Riggan was never so kind to her, and the two kiss. Meanwhile, Sam and Mike grow closer, and Mike advises Riggan to find a more realistic prop gun. Riggan reads early reviews and is incensed that they only mention Mike, who even presents Riggan's story about Carter's napkin as his own, leading to a fight between them. Riggan later accidentally locks himself out of the theater during another preview performance and has to go back into the theater and finish the play in his underwear. After the performance, Riggan goes to the bar and runs into Tabitha again. She reveals that she hates Hollywood celebrities who attempt to pass themselves for legitimate actors and announces her plans to lambaste his play even if it is good. Frustrated, Riggan gets drunk and returns to the theater the following day while hallucinating about meeting Birdman and possessing superpowers, including flight. At his dressing room, he gets into a fight with Sam, who claims nothing they're doing will mean anything in the end. Sam later has sex with Mike at the rafters above stage, while Sylvia visits Riggan again and wishes him luck. On opening night, the performance goes off perfectly. Riggan uses a real gun for the final scene, shooting himself in the head in front of the audience, and earning a standing ovation from all but Tabitha. He awakens in the hospital, with bandages that resemble Birdman's mask, and is told by Sam that the play is a hit and Tabitha has written a positive review, lauding Riggan's development of a new acting technique called "Ultra-Realism". After Sam leaves, Riggan spots birds flying outside his hospital room and climbs to the ledge. When Sam returns, Riggan is gone. Sam hurries to the window, looks down expect
